Cream rinse, a/k/a "creme" rinse, was a thinner sort of conditioner that we had before conditioners were invented. A popular brand was called Tame. Cream rinse was the generic name for any post-shampoo hair treatment that you rinsed out afterwards. The change in name is most likely due to marketing strategies.
